Steve's twentieth axiom goes back to a computer programming class he took in 7th grade on a US military base in Germany, where his teacher told him flatly: it will never work the first time.
He applies that lesson well beyond code, to launching a PPC campaign, executing a shipping plan, or bringing on a new hire. The point isn't pessimism, it's setting realistic expectations so a rough first attempt doesn't feel like a failure.
